FILM AND FASHION
Like the sound of a film about fashion? I have watched quite a few 'fashion films' and definitely have my favourites. You never really know whether a film about fashion will be entertaining or just unwatchable. These films will me you laugh, cry and think about your life in the context of where you stand in the fashion industry. Some are more inspirational than others so I have rated them in different categories. Here are a selection of my all time favourite films involving the fashion industry.
Sex and the City
(2008) Romantic Comedy
Inspirational rating - 6.5/10
Humour rating - 7/10
Fashion involvement rating - 9/10
Emotional rating - 8/10
For those of you who haven't seen Sex and the City the TV series.. it's well worth it! The television series is an emotional rollercoaster.
Sex and the City is fab. The film uplifts you so if you've just been through a break up or any relationship drama, this is the film for you. Fashion is referenced throughout the entire film as Carrie Bradshaw played by Sarah Jessica Parker is a writer for Vogue Magazine. She is obsessed with shoes (as is the real Sarah Jessica Parker) and owns one of the most incredible wardrobes known to man... honestly check it out just for the film's clothing budget.
Coco Before Chanel
(2009) Drama/Romantic
Inspirational rating - 10/10
Humour rating - 4/10
Fashion involvement rating - 9.5/10
Emotional rating - 10/10
Warning: This film will make you cry like a baby. If you're in the mood for uplifting inspiration and a relatively accurate powerful storyline then this is the film for you. Gabrielle Chanel's life story is squeezed into the space of under two hours and it is thrilling. As both a Designer and a Woman she left a legacy that changed the world. Chanel earned her title through pure perseverance.
The Devil Wears Prada
(2006) Drama/Romantic
Inspirational rating - 5/10
Humour rating - 9/10
Fashion involvement rating - 10/10
Emotional rating - 6/10
Meryl Streep plays the part of Miranda Priestly, a fiercely chic Editor of Runway magazine. Her character is inspired by Vogue's one and only Anna Wintour. As a new assistant placement opens up, Anne Hathaway's character Andy takes the challenge.
It's the type of film you watch for a fun night in. There are all kinds of issues in relationships between friends, colleagues and partners. The buzz of New York City and the romanticism of Paris is represented brilliantly. Above all, it is a humorous reality of the assistant/intern job role.
Absolutely Fabulous
(2016) Comedy
Inspirational rating - 3/10
Humour rating - 9.5/10
Fashion involvement rating - 10/10
Emotional rating - 4/10
Based on the original series, this film has taken off in the world of fashion. With an all-star cast and incredible direction, Absolutely Fabulous is an all time favourite. I think that one of the best parts of the film for me is the fact that Kate Moss has such a great role. She plays herself in the most honest and humorous way.
It's still in cinemas now so if you fancy a laugh and a bit of celeb-spotting then give #AbFab a go!
